Whole Foods is a joke, in my
Whole Foods is a joke, in my book. I don't quite get why liberals are only now catching on to this CEO's libertarian and cater-to-the-rich politics. Whole Foods has been anti-union and union-busting now for quite a while; that alone earned them a big black X in my personal shopping book a ways back. Their whole schtick is to basically be a McVersion of your local grassroots farmers' market (which of course has class/race/access issues to begin with), and it's a lame schtick.
This Klein gentleman's analogy about food stamps is incredibly apt, in my opinion. And beyond food stamps/WIC, think of all the other aspects of American life which are "socialized": roads, the postal system, schools. There's thriving private competition with the latter of those two, and you don't see the world imploding or anything. Somehow--I don't know how--business interests managed to ingrain it in the American psyche that basic health care is a product only those with money deserve to buy....instead of a fundamental human right for all.
I don't have much hope for this current "debate" (especially since the Obama administration's apparent cave-in on the public option), but currently maintain a sliver of hope that we can turn the dialogue around.
