The Great White Jenkins

Trying, Despite

AAA: Awesome Art Alert!

"Trying, Despite: Fourth Year Thesis Art Show + Performance"
04/11/08, 6 - 9 PM @ Off Grounds Gallery (300 West Main St near the Lewis/Clark statue)
Artists = Patrick Costello, James Dean Erickson, Andrew Mausert-Mooney, Jesse Wells
Musicians (starting at 8 PM) = The Great White Jenkins, Nick Schillace, and Eric Carbonara.

I've previously seen art by both Patrick and Jesse (who I am lucky to count as friends) and it is always great stuff that expresses the warmth and depth of their personalities. I'm sure that James and Andrew have similarly awesome work on display.

As for the music, it looks to be one heck of a treat. The Great White Jenkins are one of my fav Cville bands 4eva, with a really soulful blend of folk, country, jazz (avant and trad), etc. Every time they play there's some new twist on their songs and arrangements and they do a great job of incorporating really avant-garde ideas (free time, noise, improv) into really melodic, rich songwriting.

And per a comment on nailgunmedia, Eric Carbonara is associated with the unparalleled Locust Records and Nick Schillace is plain awesome.

On A School Night

Not only did I get a reasonable amount of work done today, but I also managed to catch two excellent live events:

1) By all means, go see the band HEALTH right now! I got to their show super late and caught only the last song of the set. After we literally begged for an encore, they did two more songs. Some of the absolute nastiest, most pummeling noise I've caught live. And these guys are completely unhinged performers too.

2) The Great White Jenkins. Last time I saw them, there were cellos and excursions into free time. Tonight they sounded warm and melodic and probably tighter than I've heard before. Cheers to Andy + co. for a great show; pick up their new EP.

...ok, time to sleeeeep.

Patchwork Collective

Last weekend, I had the great pleasure of catching the Patchwork Collective's 1-year anniversary show. Got there kinda late but saw some great performances by Patchworkestra, Brian Jones Duo (siiiiiiiiiiiick free jazz), Josh Small, and The Great White Jenkins. What really impressed me about Patchwork is how they pulled a crazy variety of genres together into one huge event and it all made sense. It's especially cool that they seem dedicated to pulling Richmond's finest jazz musicians into the indie rock world and vice versa. Check out Patchwork's MySpace profile for more info.
