Mikey Dread

Mikey Dread R.I.P.

Mikey Dread is dead. He was one of the greats of dub reggae, alongside King Tubby, Augustus Pablo, and Lee Scratch Perry. Given the high quality of his discography and the influence of his work -- on punk, post-rock, and electronic music alike -- it seems strange that I only heard about Mikey's passing via Sasha Frere-Jones's New Yorker blog. Anyway, even though I'm not a dub expert, this music has had a profound impact on my listening habits and musicmaking concerns. Echo + Reverb.

Spoonsomnia

Instead of falling asleep, I'm tossing and turning and compulsively listening to Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga. Absolutely Spoon's high point, from the Lee Bontecou album cover to the Mikey Dread sample at the beginning of "Finer Feelings". Stunned.
